Skin deep

This pie came out of the broiler looking pretty fine. But apparently I was too hasty on heating the lemon filling, it never set satisfactorily. Still, no one turned down a piece or seconds even. Karen had expressed a desire for lemon meringue when she was in the hospital, and with Jen, Jordi, and Will visiting, it seemed like the time to slap together the ingredients.

A tip o' the hat to Carolyn for dropping off some groceries, including the requisite lemon juice.

Tasty!

Growing up, my mom almost always packed my school lunch for me. Along beside the sandwich would be a Tasty Kake. (Jeez, I wonder what my old lunch boxes might bring on ebay if they were still around?) Tasty Baking is a Philadelphia concern started in 1914. Just recently I noticed Tasty Kakes, in particular my favorite Butterscotch Krimpets, on the shelf at a local store here in Massachusetts. Nothing is ever quite as good as you remember from childhood, but these are still pretty, say it with me, tasty!

Icky!

Karen had her total knee replacement last Tuesday. So piebee gets even less attention than usual. The two prior July entries here were written today, and back-dated to the day they transpired. Re: knee replacements, do not view this webcast of knee replacement surgery. It is very, very, icky.

We don't go back for hats

Jen wanted to do something a bit different for my birthday. She knows me well enough to know I appreciate a gift that does not require finding additional space at home for storage. Her inspiration was to rent us a sail boat excursion in Boston Harbor.

Courageous sailing

This was a surprise for me. I was told only to set aside the day for an outing. We (Jen, Jordi, Will, Karen, & I) headed east on Broadway in Somerville and kept on going into Charlestown. This route had me perplexed, but we amazingly emerged on the water front and made our way to the Courageous Sailing Center.

We had a good wind and our captain, Judy, sailed east on a reach. She let some of us novices take turns at the wheel. We got to Lovells Island and Judy dropped us off at the dock for a picnic lunch.

We tacked back after lunch. Going upwind produces the more dramatic sailing. The boat tilts over at a good angle and it seems like you are moving at a good clip. Fast enough to blow my hat off and into the water. Cap'n Judy says, "We don't go back for hats".

Rhubarb obsession

For the Fourth of July holiday, we enjoyed Dave & Trish's hospitality at Foster's Pond. This quickly thrown together (like my tardy blog postings) raisin rhubarb pecan pie sufficed. Now, I think, the rhubarb obsession has passed.
