It has been quiet on the blog, perhaps a reflection of the dreary February weather we have endured. Not that we should complain, the snowfall was skimpy here compared to much of the Washington to New York megalopolis. Last night we had the Perquackey folks over for dinner and a roll of the cubes. Karen made pasta and meatballs while I put together a couple of pies. Gracious guests provided appetizers and salads and beverages.

The first pie was an apple pie, again made with the apple brandy crust. I am ready to give up on this technique. Working with the dough is not very satisfying, it falls apart with little provocation. But the results on the dish are quite acceptable, or so I am told.

With a big meal, I went with but one slice of pie for dessert. And that was a slice from the Shaker Lemon pie from a recipe from a new pie cookbook "Pie Pie Pie: Easy Homemade Favorites" received from Jeff and Sue at the holidays. Sue and Jeff, if you are reading, I promise you a pie when (if?) you visit. This lemon pie's filling has slices from the whole lemon, rind and all. Jen was askance, but the reviews were generally good, and I enjoyed it.

Oh, and no surprise. Bert was the evening's Perquackey winner.

I forgot to bring my flash along, so the image blurs when there is movement, which is just about always when Josie is awake. Jen set up their camera on a gorilla-pod and using the remote control, took some "good" pictures. I guess if piebee.com cannot compete on picture quality, I'll just have to compensate with my insightful prose.

Karen made a yummy apple-crisp. We neglected to take leftovers home with us, something I will forever regret.

This included gingerbread, icing, and a very, very nice assortment of candies: chocolate pieces, gumdrops, licorice whips, hard candies, marshmallows, and a candy cane. The candy cane did not get into the picture, but almost everything else did, when our helpers arrived on New Year's Day.

Josie helped out, of course. The surprise was she did not do much (any?) sampling of the construction materials. Maybe the psychedelic colors were too novel for this all to register as candy. Maybe it has been twenty months of grownups saying, "don't put that in your mouth!". My daughter, of course, is past that, and has a sweet tooth. As Jen says, "it's all good." Her suggestion for the unused candy cane: Mint (candy cane) chocolate chip cookies

A few months back piebee.com was upgraded to version 4.2x Jen recently drew my attention to the fact that commenting has been broken since then. Not that I get a lot of comments, it barely registered that no one was commenting. In trying to fix this, I refreshed the blog templates. As may be evident, this clobbered the site's style sheets. The old style sheet is now restored, but it doesn't dovetail with the tags in the latest templates. This will take some work to put back together. Guess it's an opportunity to freshen up the cosmetics.

We were in Pennsylvania this Thanksgiving, visiting my sister and family. Diane prepared a splendid table, as is evident from this picture. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, very traditional, all good. Have I forgotten something? Dessert was a peanut butter pie, or a pumpkin roll. Did I say "or"? Ha ha ... of course I should have said "and".

But wait, there's more. My cousin Sue and hubby Jeff had all of us over on Friday after. The configuration of the table did not lend itself to a classic photo, but this pic of our hosts looks pretty good to me. Pie was mincemeat, yum.

Jen & Jordi & Josie dropped by yesterday after doing some shopping. After doing some visiting inside and out, we got dinner together. Dinner itself was easy, store-bought Caesar salad and pizza. Jen also brought along Braeburn apples for a pie. I made a crust while Jen peeled, cored, and spiced the apples. The pie was pretty tasty, and with her hand on the spoon, Jen got enough sugar into the filling to suite her taste.
